Week ending Friday 24th February

1 Samuel 18:3

New International Version (NIV)

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.

This week we have begun using “Values for Life” in worship and the first theme will be friendship. We will be looking at different aspects of friendship each week.

This week we looked at “Friends in Good times and Bad” focused around the story of David and Jonathan. We also learnt one of David’s palms “ The Lords my Shepherd”. In worship this morning this was led by “One Rhythm” our Year 5 boy band. Congratulations on their first performance.

On Wednesday Year 3 visited Cheylesmore Partnership Centre to study the Tudors. They had a great time experimenting with Wattle and Daub.

Yesterday we had a visit from our Educational Improvement Advisor who spent time in key Stage One. She said the high level of personalisation was very impressive.

Pupils have been very been bringing to read some of the new books we have purchased. They seemed to be really enjoying them. Please encourage Key Stage 2 children to leave a book review on their class blog.

We hope to see you at the Maths workshop next week.

Week ending Friday 10th February

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will you sustain; he will never let the righteous fall.” Psalm 55:22

In worship this week the theme has been reviewing our work and celebrating achievements. After half term, the school will introduce a new values for life worship scheme which will incorporate a theme for each half term. The theme for after half term will be  courage.

This week has been a busy yet productive week within the school. On Wednesday Mrs Barrett and Mrs Collins escorted the school’s swimming team to a gala event at Tilehill Wood. The team were well behaved and performed to their best—achieving fourth place.

I was very impressed with the work carried out by Mrs Watts in today’s assembly. It is wonderful to see Y4 working so hard to learn a string instrument and in such a short space of time become so accomplished. It is also very impressive to see Miss Nickerson and Mrs Palmer learning along with the children—this sends out a powerful message that we are all learners at St John’s.

Thank you to all staff for their hard work this half term. Once again the school has made real progress and has a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.

Thank you to all parents who attended parents evening—it was extremely well attended. On the 29th February Miss Nickerson is leading a Maths workshop based on the school’s new route way through calculations. If you would like to know more about how Maths is taught across the school then please come along

Have a great half term.

Message from Chair of Governers

Last Monday at the National College of School Leadership our school was used as an example of how Leaders should be developed. Over 90 potential school leaders from across the country where participating.

Over the last 4 years at St Johns we recruited highly talented staff and invested heavily in their professional development.

The result of this has been the huge improvements in the school and we now have a highly performing staff at all levels, they are ambitious, driven and highly motivated.

There is a balance of younger and more experienced staff and everyone works above and beyond to make St John’s the great place it is.

It is with great pride that we are able to inform you that Mr Taylor has been appointed as Headteacher elsewhere. He will leave St John’s at the end of the summer term beginning at his school in September.

We offer our upmost congratulations and support on gaining this appointment at this point in his career. It is a great achievement.

By recruiting top people the school benefits from their innovation, being a place know for helping people to move on in their career means we expect to attract the best applicants. It makes St John’s vibrant.

I know some of you may be disappointed to hear this news, however the Governors are confident they will be able to find the right person to continue the fantastic work that’s already been achieved and will be meeting very early next term to begin the recruitment process.

Well Done Mr Taylor!.

Talking with the Major

Pupils met some of the members of the British Legion

Thank you for all comments on Top Blog from last week.  I am pleased you are enjoying your lessons.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

This week in assemblies we have been talking about caring for each other and acting in the way God would want us to. As part of this topic we have also had a focus on anti bullyingand treating each other with respect.

Today, Mr Brown and three pupils from Y6 will be meeting with the Lord Mayor at a Poppy Appeal celebration event. Our school has been identified as being particularly proactive in thesupport of raising money for the Royal British Legion and thisis something we are all very proud of. Thank you to the whole community for your continuous support with the charity events—the caring approach sent out by the whole communityis a very powerful message for all children at the school. The time is coming around again for the Spring Fayre. It mayseem like a long way off (31st March) but a lot of organising goes into the event. The PTA are in need of helpers on the dayand if you would like to volunteer, even for a very short period of time, then please contact the school or Carol Keep. The PTA do a tremendous job and as a school we are verygrateful for their hard work in raising vital funds. Only last month the school was presented with a cheque of over £2000to buy new playground equipment.

Last night the school football team played against Stoke Primary in the league and won 2-1 thanks to a goal fromHarry Knight and one from Ewan Haig. The team is really beginning to flourish and has only lost once all season! It is great to see the blogs all going so well—if you haven’t hada chance then take a look and post a comment.Have a lovely weekend.
